Tell me about a mistake you made at work and what you learned from it.

BehavioralJunior

In shortPick a real, moderate mistake, own it without excuses, explain what you did to fix it right away, and focus on the concrete change you made afterwards so it doesn't happen again.

Model answer

Everyone makes mistakes, and interviewers know it. They want to see ownership and learning. Use STAR and spend most of the time on what you did and changed.

Example answer:

Situation: I was testing a fitness app release that included a new workout timer.

Task: I had to test the timer and run the regression checklist on iOS and Android.

Action: I tested the timer carefully on both platforms, but only with the app in the foreground. After release, users reported that the timer stopped when they locked the screen, which is what most people do during a workout. When I saw the reports, I told my lead right away that I had missed that scenario, reproduced it within minutes, and wrote a clear bug report so the developer could start immediately. I tested the hotfix the same day, including locking the screen, switching apps and receiving a call.

Result: The fix was out in two days. Since then, I always include background, lock screen and interruption checks for any feature that runs over time, and I added them to our regression checklist so the whole team covers them.

Tips

  • Choose something real but not disastrous.
  • Own it: “I missed”, not “it was missed”.
  • The lesson should be a concrete habit or change, not just “I’ll be more careful”.

What they're looking for

Honesty and ownership, a calm reaction, quick action to limit the damage, and a specific lesson that changed how you work.

Common mistakes

  • Saying you've never made a mistake.
  • Choosing a "mistake" that is really a strength, like "I work too hard".
  • Blaming others or the situation.
  • Picking a mistake so serious it raises doubts, with no lesson learned.
