File signature
Also called: Magic number
The first bytes of a file that reveal its real type, regardless of the extension.
Definition
Servers check the signature (sometimes called the magic number) because a file's name and extension are easy to fake. A renamed .exe still starts with 'MZ', not with a PDF or JPEG signature.
In practice
A file named invoice.pdf is rejected because its first bytes show it's actually a ZIP archive.
