Negative testing

Testing with invalid or unexpected input to check the software handles it gracefully.

Definition

Negative testing checks how the system behaves when users enter wrong data or do unexpected things. The software should show clear errors and never crash, lose data or accept bad input.

In practice

Entering letters in a phone number field, or pasting a 5,000-character comment, should show a helpful message rather than crash the app.
