Requirement
A statement of what the software must do or how well it must do it.
Definition
A requirement describes a capability or condition the product must have. Functional requirements describe behavior ("users can reset their password"), non-functional ones describe qualities ("the home screen loads in under 2 seconds"). Testers check requirements are clear and testable.
In practice
"The password must be at least 8 characters and contain one number" is a requirement you can turn directly into test cases.
