Safe area
Also called: Notch, Safe area insets
The part of the screen not covered by the notch, Dynamic Island, rounded corners or home indicator.
Definition
Modern phones have screen areas where content can be hidden or hard to tap. Layouts should keep important content and buttons inside the safe area. Testers check edge-to-edge screens on devices with different cut-outs.
In practice
On an iPhone with a Dynamic Island, the app's back button is partly hidden behind it in landscape mode.
