UI state
Also called: Component state, Interaction state
How a component looks and behaves in a given situation: default, hover, pressed, focused, disabled, loading, error.
Definition
Every interactive element has several visual states. Designers define them, and developers often forget some. Testing each state, and the transitions between them, catches many visual and functional bugs.
In practice
A text field has default, focused, filled, error and disabled states. If the error state looks identical to the default state, users won't notice their mistake.
