Black-box testing
Also called: Specification-based testing, Behavioral testing
Testing based only on inputs and outputs, without looking at the code.
Definition
In black-box testing the tester treats the software as a closed box and designs tests from requirements and behavior, not from the code. Techniques like equivalence partitioning and boundary value analysis are black-box techniques. Most manual testing is black-box.
In practice
You test a login screen by entering valid and invalid credentials and checking the results, with no idea how the login code is written.
