Equivalence partitioning
Also called: Equivalence class partitioning, ECP
Splitting inputs into groups that should behave the same, then testing one value from each group.
Definition
Equivalence partitioning divides input data into partitions (classes) where every value should be treated the same way by the software. Testing one representative value per partition gives good coverage with few tests. It covers both valid and invalid partitions.
In practice
An age field accepts 18-60. Partitions are below 18 (invalid), 18-60 (valid) and above 60 (invalid), so you might test 10, 35 and 75.
