Semantic color
Also called: Design token, Color token
A named color such as 'label' or 'background' that has a light and a dark value.
Definition
Using semantic colors instead of hard-coded hex values lets the app adapt to dark mode and high contrast automatically. Hard-coded colors are a top source of dark mode bugs.
In practice
Text using the 'label' color turns white in dark mode; text hard-coded as #111 stays nearly black and becomes invisible.
