A MAJOR.MINOR.PATCH version format where each number signals how big a change is.
Definition
In 2.4.1, a major change bumps 2, new features bump 4 and bug fixes bump 1. The build number (e.g. 318) is separate and identifies the exact build.
In practice
Release notes for 3.0.0 hint at big changes, so you plan a much wider regression test than for 2.4.2.
