Audio focus
Also called: Audio session
Which app currently owns the sound output, and how other apps pause or lower their audio.
Definition
Phones decide which app may play sound. A call, alarm or navigation prompt takes audio focus, and other apps should pause or duck their volume, then resume sensibly.
In practice
A podcast should pause when a call comes in, and lower its volume briefly while the maps app says 'turn left'.
