Screen reader
Also called: VoiceOver, TalkBack
Software that reads the screen aloud for blind and low-vision users, like VoiceOver or TalkBack.
Definition
A screen reader converts on-screen content into speech or braille and lets users navigate with gestures or a keyboard. VoiceOver (iOS, macOS), TalkBack (Android) and NVDA or JAWS (Windows) are common. Testers check that every element has a meaningful label, role and state, in a logical order.
In practice
With TalkBack on, an icon-only "Share" button is read as "Unlabelled button", so the user cannot know what it does.
