Touch target
Also called: Tap target, Hit area
The area of the screen that responds to a tap, which should be large enough for a finger.
Definition
A touch target is the tappable area of a control, which can be larger than the visible icon. Guidelines recommend at least 44x44 points on iOS and 48x48 dp on Android; on the web, WCAG 2.5.8 asks for at least 24x24 CSS pixels (44x44 is the comfortable target). Small or overlapping targets cause mis-taps and accessibility problems.
In practice
The small "x" to close a banner is only 16 pixels wide, so users keep tapping the ad behind it instead.
